Bernard of Clairvaux, Saint: [Opuscula.] [Brescia: Angelus and Jacobus Brittanicus, ] [18th March 1495.] 8vo., ff. 312 [of 348]. Lacking the first 2 and last 34 leaves. Some light browning, occasional spotting and ink trials, one tiny marginal wormhole, a few brief early annotations and simple pointing hands, first two leaves stained and repaired to frayed corners. 19th-century half calf, spine very rubbed, joints splitting and worn but boards held, loss from head of spine. The first pocket edition of the Opuscula, thirty shorter works, by Bernard of Clairvaux (following a 1478 folio and a 1491 quarto). It is not identical to earlier editions: his essay ‘De amore dei’ is here printed for the first time. This copy, although lacking the title and colophon, matches in collation with and is almost certainly from the 1495 Brescia edition, although a prefatory poem is dated February 1494. It is uncommon in the British Isles, with the ISTC locating copies in the British Library (also imperfect), Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester and London - it is not listed in Oates, nor catalogue of Bodley incunables, nor Rhodes catalogue of incunables in Oxford colleges, nor the Cathedral Libraries Catalogue. ISTC ib00364000; Goff B364; Supplement to Hain, 944; Proctor 6989; BMC IA 31147.   Ref: 32092  show full image..
